2017-2018 Opéra Nouvelle Season Schedule

Presented at The Jewish Community Center and NOCCA

Our October 3 and October 5, 2017, Opéra Nouvelle preview concerts will focus on Cavalleria RusticanaPagliacci and Verismo Opera.  We’ll explore realism (verismo) in operatic compositions, and how verismo opera productions have changed throughout the years to preserve operatic tradition while advocating new production concepts.  JCC start time is 7:00 p.m. and NOCCA Marsalis Theatre start time is also 7:00 p.m. The event is approximately one hour in length.

The Opéra NouvelleOrpheus in the Underworld series will take place on November 7, 2017, at The Caribbean Room at 6:30, and November 9, 2017, at The Jesuit School* at 7:00 p.m.  Our theme will be operatic tales of Orpheus from the 17th Century to present day. The original storyline began with the heroic demigod of music, Orpheus, who rescued his beloved Eurydice from the underworld realm of Pluto. But our production of Orpheus in the Underworld gives it a different spin! The Eurydice of Jacques Offenbach does not think it is such a bad thing to be taken to the Underworld by Pluto. In fact, she is rather flattered!

The Opéra NouvelleChampion: An Opera in Jazz series will take place on March 6 and March 8, 2018. The March 6 location is New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) and the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. The March 8 location is the Lusher School Theatre+ and the start time is 7:00 p.m. This is the riveting story of Emile Griffith, the welterweight boxer who accidentally killed his rival, Benny “The Kid” Paret. New Orleans’ own Terence Blanchard composed this work in 2013.

The final Opéra Nouvelle preview concert will take place on April 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ursuline Academy, featuring music from the Anniversary Celebration!, including Giuseppe Verdi’s Aïda, Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, and a staged version of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
