Astor Piazzolla‘s surreal tango masterpiece María de Buenos Aires opens our 2017-2018 Chamber Opera Series at the JW Marriott New Orleans Ballroom on September 9th & 10th, 2017. A special new production featuring the finest interpreters of the primary roles, Catalina Cuervo as Maria, a mystical figure born on the day God was drunk, Luis Alejandro Orozco, as El Payador, a traveling ballad singer of many songs, and as the Duende/Narrator, tango singer Milton Loayza. An evening of love, betrayal, and tango in an intimate theater-in-the-round experience. Performances will be followed by true milonga dance for the audience.
This production is in collaboration with Casa Argentina New Orleans in support of their mission to enrich the cultural diversity of New Orleans. Maestro Robert Lyall leads our special Piazzolla orchestra AKA performers from the LPO, including a return of tango favorites Daniel Binelli and Polly Ferman renowned Bandoneon player and tango pianist duo familiar to New Orleans audiences and the foremost performers and torchbearers of the music of Astor Piazzolla. In addition to the original Piazzolla operita, we will present some of the most beloved tangos of Piazzolla with performances by international tango stars Maureen and Carlos Urrego and Tango Axis Argentine Tango School of Miami.
